County Sligo: Woman Dies After Being Hit by Train


A woman in her 40s has died after she was struck by a train in County Sligo in the Republic of Ireland.

Another woman, aged in her 20s, was taken to Sligo University Hospital with serious injuries.

Gardaí (Irish police) said the incident occurred on the train line at Ballisadare at about 16:00 local time.

Irish broadcaster RTÉ reports , externalthat the woman who died was walking close to the line when she was struck by the Sligo to Dublin train.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

About 100 people were on the train at the time of the incident. The passengers have since been taken away bus.

The train is likely to remain at the site for some time while a technical examination takes place.

As well as gardaí, the incident will also be investigated by the Railway Accident Investigation Unit.

It is responsible for examining all fatalities and serious injuries on the Irish rail network.

Local politicians have been responding to the news.

Writing on Twitter, independent TD Marc McSharry said it was “horrific”.

“Sincere sympathy to families of deceased and prayers for injured and thoughts with staff and passengers,” he added.

Also extending his sympathies, Martin Kenny TD commended the quick action of the emergency services who attended the scene.

He said the incident “will lead to a difficult time ahead for the family and friends of those involved” and he urged the local community to come together and support them.

Irish Rail said a “full schedule of services” would operate between Sligo and Dublin Connolly on Thursday.
