Ireland Child Benefit Blow as Minister Rules Out Extension to Over 18s Still in School

In response to a parliamentary question from Labour’s Sean Sherlock, Social Protection Minister Heather Humphreys said that it would cost €65m to extend Child Benefit to parents who have 18-year-olds in secondary schools.

There are no plans to extend Child Benefit to students aged 18 and 19 who are still in full-time education, Social Welfare Minister Heather Humphreys has stated.

The total cost of extending the monthly €140 to children aged 18 still in school would cost €65 million per year.

Child Benefit is automatically paid to all parents or guardians with children under the age of 16.

The monthly payment can be paid in respect of children aged 16 and 17 if they are still in full-time education.
